Background of the Study

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is crucial in ensuring that nurses remain competent, up-to-date with current practices, and capable of providing the highest standard of care. CPD encompasses various learning activities, including formal education, workshops, training, and conferences (Cameron et al., 2024). Research indicates that CPD positively influences job satisfaction by enhancing nurses’ skills, boosting confidence, and increasing their sense of professional fulfillment.

At State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, nurses participate in CPD programs to maintain their clinical knowledge and skills. However, the relationship between CPD and job satisfaction has not been thoroughly explored in this hospital. This study aims to assess the impact of CPD on nurses’ job satisfaction and identify areas where further development opportunities could enhance nursing practice.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of CPD in enhancing nursing competence, there is limited research on how it affects job satisfaction at State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri. Many nurses express dissatisfaction with their professional development opportunities, which may contribute to low morale, burnout, and high turnover rates. Understanding the link between CPD and job satisfaction is essential for improving nurse retention and job satisfaction at the facility.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effect of Continuing Professional Development on nurses’ job satisfaction at State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri.

2. To identify the factors that influence nurses' participation in CPD programs.

3. To recommend strategies for improving CPD opportunities to enhance job satisfaction.

Research Questions

1. How does Continuing Professional Development affect nurses’ job satisfaction at State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri?

2. What are the barriers to participation in CPD programs among nurses at the hospital?

3. How can CPD opportunities be improved to enhance job satisfaction among nurses?

Research Hypotheses

1. Continuing Professional Development positively influences nurses’ job satisfaction at State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri.

2. Barriers such as time constraints, lack of funding, and limited resources affect nurses’ participation in CPD programs.

3. Improving access to CPD opportunities will lead to increased job satisfaction among nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is focused on nurses working at State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, and evaluates the effect of CPD on their job satisfaction. Limitations include potential biases in data collection due to the self-reported nature of the study and a limited scope in evaluating CPD programs offered at the hospital. The study does not consider external factors affecting job satisfaction, such as family-related stressors or organizational issues unrelated to CPD.
